Guidelines for Pastor’s Salaries and Benefits

The congregation (or designated committee) negotiates a fair compensation package with the pastor. These guidelines are adaptable for full-time, part-time, or bivocational roles.

Housing:
Housing (parsonage or housing allowance) is part of total compensation and should reflect fair rental value in the community. The church may designate a housing allowance annually (recorded in minutes) in accordance with IRS guidelines, including utilities and related expenses.

Retirement:
The congregation should contribute regularly to a retirement plan to support the pastor’s long-term financial security.

Medical Insurance:
Provide equitable medical insurance coverage for the pastor and family, mutually agreed upon.

Days Off & Vacation:

  • One and a half days off weekly (except emergencies)

  • Vacation based on years of service:

    • 3 weeks (first 3 years)

    • 4 weeks (years 4–10)

    • 5 weeks (10+ years)
Vacation timing is mutually agreed upon.

Special Circumstances Leave:
Up to 30 days annually for family, medical, or crisis situations, with continued salary and benefits, subject to church approval.

Sabbath Rest:
After two years of continuous service, the pastor may be granted a sabbatical for renewal. Salary and benefits continue, and the pastor is expected to remain at least one year following the sabbatical.

These guidelines are recommendations and may be adjusted to fit local church needs.
